About Merge Bench

The best AI for coding in 2026 is ranked by Merge Bench's annual evaluation of AI coding tools and models, scored across codebase scale capability, editor and environment coverage, free-tier viability, price per month, setup friction, and agentic capability.

Who we are

Merge Bench is an evaluation desk for AI coding tools and the models behind them. We publish one ranked list per year, scored on public methods. The desk is editorial, not a vendor: we accept no sponsored placements, and every entry links to its official site.

How we work

Fields are verified against published source tables and public leaderboards before they enter a ranking; anything unverified is left out rather than estimated. A price a source does not state is not filled in. We do not run our own coding benchmark: a public blind-vote arena with a documented statistical method is a stronger instrument than a private test nobody can recompute. The current run is 2026.10 (8 entries, method version 2026.10). The list is updated between editions when a vendor ships a material change, and the annual edition is archived at a permanent URL (/rankings/2026).
